"Socks and Stillettos?"

Remember the days when you'd silently (I hope) make fun of the old guy rocking the socks and sandals (the socks usually being black)?

Those days are gone - the trend from a couple years ago is back. Socks and heels.

They popped up on the runway and then in respected fashion magazines across the world over the last few months, taking a cue from the private-school-girl-meets-sex-kitten page. Think Cher in "Clueless" circa 1995.

Knee socks have been a favorite of mine for years (I skated roller derby...knee socks are essentials for shin protection). In the winter, I sometimes pair some cute capris with striped socks and platform heels. I promise people will not look at you strange - they'll be envious of your fashion-forwardness (is that a word? oh well it is now). They can add color when you're feeling gray and black.

My favorite place to buy socks is www.sockdreams.com. These peacock pattern knee socks made my mouth water (they're reasonably priced as well - $9).

As for the shoes, I'd put on some bright socks and rock these Alejandro Ingelmo "Sophia" platforms (Bloomingdales.com - $216).

The actress was stunning in this golden yellow Christian Dior single shoulder beaded silk gown accessorized with a statement cocktail ring at the Marrakesh Film festival.

"Turtlenecking"

It's cold out. Yesterday, it was something like 12 degrees when I drove back home from Iowa (bestie's parents live south of the Quad Cities). Cold, bright, and weird-looking in general. It's also one of the coldest winters in history for parts of Europe.

One way designers are keeping us warm (yet chic) this winter is the turtleneck. But, it's not the "underneath the ugly sweater" version many of us recall from childhood.

Turtlenecks these days seem to be shooting toward accentuating one's curves, while keeping us from freezing to death. Case in point, this gorgeous YSL ribbed turtleneck. It's sleek and draws the eye to, well, what God hath given us ladies.

Pair with skinny jeans or capris (in the winter you can do capris with boots - looks very cool) and don't forget your coat!

My Fashion Wishes for 2011~

With the holiday right around the corner and the year coming to an end, I felt it time to list off what trends I'm hoping for next year, both what I hope become trends, what stays around, and what I hope (to God and all that's holy) goes AWAY.

In a fashion world run by Devon...

-More glitter/statement-wear: Sequins, glitter - they were everywhere this past year. Please keep doing that! I always get frownie when I spot some gal in the club in basic black or (worse) white. No! Not acceptable! Leave your tennis shoes and t-shirts at home! (labels to watch: Arden B, BCBG Max Azria, Calvin Klein).

-Big purses shrinking: Ladies, yes, I admit I keep a certain amount of stuff in my handbag (wallet, keys, ipod, stereo front, Blackberry, chapstick, pen, etc). But, we do NOT need to be carrying what amounts to a glorified suitcase around with us! (exception: diaper bags for Moms on the go are perfectly acceptable) (labels to watch: Marc by Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, Juicy Couture)

-Matching outfits: Maybe this is a Midwestern thing. Maybe this is a bad sense of personal style. If I see one more couple coming out to functions (an NFL game or other professional sporting event being the exception - support your team) dressed ALIKE, I will take my Harajuku Girl studded bracelet and stab someone in the eye! Come on - we're all individuals! How hard is it to dress yourself? (labels to watch: YOUR OWN CLOSET)

-Go big or go home: Oh designers, keep making those big necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. To quote my old roommate, "I don't care if it's real" (note - it helps, but not necessary) "I just want it to be real big!" I love seeing several necklaces adorning an outfit and if they don't match...so what? It's fun and something a little quirky! Also, if a ring is so big you could potentially see it from space, well who doesn't love that??? (labels to watch: Alexander McQueen, Burberry Prorsum, and Kate Spade)

-Camels go back to the desert: I know the "camel" color is all the rage, but I find it so drab. Please go back to the Sahara and leave us fashionistas who like bright colors alone!

"Gloves On?"

Versace Runway Ready to Wear fall 2006

Gloves. To the wrist. To the elbow. Vintage, velvet, silk, even knit. They add drama to any outfit (which, as you may've figured out, I live for in an outfit). They add an old-world elegance that is trendy chic at the same time.

I came dangerously close the other day to adding an elbow-length pair of gold sparkly gloves to my collection (think Samantha Jones in "Sex and the City").

Versace Fall 2010

Apparently, I'm not the only one re-embracing this trend. Reed Krakoff, Versace (again), Vuitton - the list of designers using gloves to add flair to their work is too numerous to mention for the fall collections.

Heck, you can get a sexy pair of elbow-length velvet gloves anytime around prom season (I have two)or Halloween for that matter. I also am a big fan of glove finds at vintage stores (the stitching on those gloves is nothing short of impeccable).

Is this too "over the top" or am I simply again working with the fashion houses instead of against them?

Gone, but Never Forgotten~

This year, fashion lost one of it's brightest stars...

You know the name, you know the iconic designs, you know his brilliance - Alexander McQueen.

We lost McQueen in February when he committed suicide in London. It devastated the fashion community and left the world a little less bright.

Before starting his own label, McQueen was the chief designer for the legendary fashion house Givenchy. He won four British Designer of the Year awards (1996, 1997, 2001, and 2003).

McQueen never shied away from the avante guard, the outrageous, the just plain show-stopping designs that separate everyday wear...from art.

I've always believed what we wear is its own art form - McQueen clearly believed that as well.

While his label carries on, it is bittersweet.

For the record, I have had one opportunity to purchase one of McQueen's legendary scarves - the red/black skull/cross-bones logo. I am currently kicking myself (it was at one of my beloved consignment haunts) for not dropping the money when it was there.

Hopefully, that chance will come again.

In the meantime, Google image McQueen's work. It's some of the most beautiful work fashion will ever see.

"The Nap No Slouch For Shopping"

I had an ex-friend once tell me that Indianapolis was the "armpit of America" when it came to shopping. She said this clad in a Burberry jumper purchased at Saks and had worked at the Chanel counter.

With that in mind, the highly-respected "Forbes" Magazine ranked the Top 10 Cities in America for shopping today.

Admittedly, we dream of a High Street or Miracle Mile of our very own.

Indianapolis is #5 in the US for shopping according to this list. I was, in a word, stunned.

Prior to Indianapolis, New Orleans was my home for three years. That was the first time I'd ever been inside a Saks Fifth Avenue or a Macy's for that matter (this was prior to Macy's sucking up Marshall Field, LS Ayres, etc).

I've been to King of Prussia Mall outside Philly (overstimulating probably best describes it based on sheer size). I've also been to the Natick Collection outside Boston and Newbury Street in Boston, as well as the Mall of America outside Minneapolis.

So, how did the Crossroads of America make the Top 10? According to Forbes, it's about access for the general population - Castleton Square Mall (home of one of two H&Ms in the metro area and the Von Maur with the Juicy Couture counter = ) is the biggest mall in the state and is located right on the I-465 loop.

Down the road is the Fashion Mall at Keystone at the Crossing which is also just off an exit ramp. In the past six years, they've added Tiffany's, Burberry, a MAC store, and Nordstrom as one of the anchors. We're getting a Nordstrom Rack next year.

Who else is surprised by this ranking? Or, conversely, not surprised?

Not *Quite* So Ugly~

Over the weekend, I went to visit my college mates in Chicago. While out, we spotted an "Ugly Sweater Pub Crawl." These seem to be the rage these days (heck, I got invited to two different "Ugly Sweater" parties here in Indianapolis).

It got me thinking - what qualifies as an "Ugly Sweater?"

One of the guys on the sweater crawl was wearing something that literally looks like most of Dolce and Gabbana's winter 2010-2011 collection. That retro, snowflake print is actually classic in style and not ugly at all. At least to me. Also, if a label on the level of D&G can base an entire collection on something you'd routinely see at Abercrombie and Fitch...well, that's testimony enough.

You be the judge....

(Editor's note: the so-called "Bill Cosby" sweaters, most cardigans with embroidery, and any sweater with holiday macrame *ARE* actually ugly)

Congratulations to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden! The couple who have been together for four years tied the knot this past Saturday. The event was complete with friends and family and a real live elephant for good luck. Nicole wore three gorgeous gowns all designed by Marchesa when she said I do on December 11th at her father Lionel Richie's lavish Beverly Hills home.

One of her custom made wedding gowns featured a ball-gown skirt designed with over 100 yards of hand-draped silk organza and tulle petals.

The couple tied the knot under a tent and the scene was set to resemble that of a French garden. The couples children daughter Harlow, 2 was the flower girl and their 15 month old son Sparrow was the ring-bearer.

The guest list included Gwen Stefani, DJ Samantha Ronson, Khole Kardashian, celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe and was officiated by Rev Run.

The Bride said of the evening "It was magical," and her new husband said "It was the best night of my life."

"Seeing Red"

It seems this warm color is absolutely everywhere these days. I, for one, could not be more pleased. Red has always been, hands down, my favorite color.

In high school, by example, our colors were "crimson and gold" (translation - red and gold). When I got my "Crimson Charger Command Drill Team" red jacket, it was a small fashion victory (it was red - yes I still have it).

At a time when warmth is the only thing on everyone's minds, red can at least give the illusion of heat and fire.

As a perpetual collector of coats, this red trench from Dolce and Gabbana is just lush!

Also, one of my 2010 fashion revelations - red shoes rock ANY outfit (if you can pull off red shiny or sparkly shoes....well then that's a whole separate level).

"Monochrome Winter Blues"

Last week, I crawled out of my warm and comfy bed and went into work. Baring in mind, my regular job begins at 4:00 am. I put on a black/gray turtleneck, gray pants, gray boots. I was doing a very close impression to an overdressed Theda Bara sans eyeliner.

When I arrived at the office, all of my fellow "before dawn" shift folk were ALSO wearing NOTHING but monochrome. It was a disturbing trend to me.

Maybe it's the lack of daylight, the gray skies, the white-covered ground, whatever. But it seems like when the winter arrives, so does the lack of color.

Everything I've ever been told about great style is how to sneak in those pops of color, particularly when it comes to accessories.

For me, it's red. I could put red with everything I own and never tire of it.

"Small Business Saturday Shine"

Word is spreading - tomorrow is "Small Business Saturday," encouraging people to skip the mall and hit up those cute, locally-owned boutiques and shops for their holiday shopping.

The thing I've always loved about smaller, locally-owned shops is making friends with the cashiers, managers, etc. Nine times out of ten (especially true here in the "317") they know someone you know. They also can give good tips and discounts!

This month, I told you about the leopard print explosion (visit www.fashionwrapup.com to view). This gorgeous faux leopard cape (with purple fabric lining - love the contrast) is available at Broad Ripple's Niche Boutique (915 Broad Ripple Ave - $64).

If you want original jewelry, look no further than Silver in the City (434 Mass Ave/downtown). This drool-worthy faceted Labradorite pendant ($65) is stunning and the perfect "statement piece" (as my readers know already, I like my jewelry colorful, big, and eye-catching).

Finally, I must give a nod to my new favorite vintage store, Harloh's (A Paige from the Past). Located at 630 Virginia Avenue in Fountain Square, I walked in the other weekend to the sounds of some wonderful 60s doo-wop and wall-to-wall vintage clothing. They offer a mix of designer vintage (I spied some gorgeous vintage Prada pumps and a delicious Gucci denim skirt). They also have a fabulous wall of vintage brooches!

Bow Down or Bow Out?

I want to put a trend out into the court of public opinion: back bows.

When I think of bows, I think of Christmas gifts. Headbands (for those under the age of 12). Shoelaces.

But, on party dresses? The jury is still out. I saw a gorgeous pink dress from White House/Black Market (yes I know that's a contradictory statement). Problem? The massive bow on the back. In fairness, designers have moved the bow up from near the hips (circa 1985) to the middle of the back. But, despite that, I can't get on-board with this trend.

Something special happened just a few hours ago! Burberry, the luxury fashion brand known for its plaid umbrellas and iconic trench coats surpassed three million fans on Facebook. The British based brand has become the most-widely followed fashion brand on the social networking site!

Joanna Shields, Vice President for Facebook EMEA said "Burberry is no longer just a fashion company - today they are a thriving media enterprise! Burberry's successful not just because it makes great clothes but because it understands the importance of sparking interest in the community and using social media to engage and delight their consumers."

Burberry hit the 1 million fan mark in about a year, they doubled that number in six months and it took just another month to reach 3 million fans! What is the brand doing to have this much success on the web? With online initiatives such as livestreaming fashion shows and "The Art of the Trench", which gives people a chance to submit photos of themselves wearing their favorite trench and sharing it with the world its no wonder the brand gaining ground on the web!

Lanvin for H&M Fashion Show~

Last night at The Pierre Hotel in New York City, Alber Elbaz presented his Lanvin for H&M Haute Couture show. Celebrities from Emma Roberts, Sophia Coppola, and Andi McDowell attended the event. Lanvin for H&M has two launch dates in the US and Canada the fabulous collection will hit stores on November 20th and worldwide on November 23rd.

Pieces of the haute couture show along with five original signed sketches from Alber Elbaz went up for auction on www.lanvinforhm.com. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to UNICEF, as part of H&M’s “All for Children” project. The online auction will end on 26th November at midnight CET.
